MHHA Scholarship

MICHIGAN HARNESS HORSEMEN ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

These criteria are to be used in selecting scholarship recipients from funding established by the Michigan Harness Horsemen Association annual meeting auction, other fundraisers, and contributions made by the membership.    

Criteria may include but are not limited to the following: academic performance, financial need, strong leadership skills, character, motivation, community service, and knowledge of the harness racing industry.  Individual past achievements, community involvement, and other experiences are included in the essay portion of the application.

Each applicant must have knowledge of and show, and demonstrate how the racing industry has impacted his/her life. The application should describe the candidate’s connection to racing and what they have learned about Standardbred.   

Recipients of scholarships must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary educational program that prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation. They may be pursuing a career of their choice.   

Scholarships are available to MHHA members, and dependents or immediate family members- including step-children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews- of living or deceased members that are/or have been an MHHA member for two years in good standing.

The scholarship committee consists of two board members and one horsemen of the general membership or racing official that has knowledge of the industry. 

Applicants are eligible for Scholarship awards for four years, which may or may not be consecutive years earned.   

Application deadline:  April 15, 2023

All application forms and transcripts from the applicant’s high school or college must be postmarked no later the 04/15/23 and mailed to the MHHA Scholarship Fund @ 2501 Jolly Rd, Suite 110, Okemos, MI 48864.

The 2023 Scholarship Fund of $10,000 is to be divided by a 50/25/15/8/5 percentage for 1st thru 5th places. If less than five applications are approved the top three awards will be paid.
